Nodipecten nodosus, Pectinidae

The Nodipecten nodosus is a tropical bivalve present in the eastern Pacific and in western Atlantic up to about 185 m of depth. It lives attached to the rocks in grottoes or ridges facing gravelly or sandy bottoms. It nourishes of phytoplankton and is predated by the octopuses. The shell, with purple contrasts, may also be yellow-orange or almost white. It reaches the 15 cm and also due to its sculptural look is of course appreciated by collectors © Giuseppe Mazza
