‘Bougainville’ belongs to those old roses, called Noisette, created by the two brothers Nooisette, one, nurseryman in Paris, the other in South Carolina, who crossed a Rosa chinensis with the Rosa moschata, thus obtaining several varieties of exceptional remontancy.
Born in France in 1822 in the nurseries of Pierre Cochet, is distributed in France by Jean-Pierre Vibert and honoured to the famous Parisian admiral and explorer Louis-Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811), the first French to officially circumnavigate the globe.
Prickly shrub that easily surpasses the height of 2 m, therefore cultivable also as small climber, with lovely leaves, often elongated, of a nice healthy green, that have led this variety up to our days due to their exceptional resistance to the diseases.
The double flowers, about 4 cm broad, are much perfumed and open ceaselessly during the whole vegetative period. They are united in erect small clusters that however bend under the weight, seen that they may bear even 50 elements. Purple buds and intense pink petals, with lilac shades, that fade time passing.
Suffers from cold.
