Family : Psittacidae
The Red-fan parrot (Deroptyus accipitrinus) gets its scientific name from the resemblance with that of a hawk (Accipiter sp.). In fact, it has a mottled livery with bars on the chest that draw vaguely those of the cited raptor. It lives in the northern part of South America in small groups of up to 20 animals and is a typical inhabitant of the tropical forests. It has a particular red mottled crest that stands on the nape like a fan and that opens when it’s excited or intrigued.
