Amphiuma means Family : Amphiumidae Odd membre of the Caudata, Amphiuma means has hands and feet reduced to only two rudimentary toes. After all, it doesn’t need them, as it spends all life in the water. Diffused in America from Virginia to Louisiana in stagnant waters or with weak currents, it can be more than one metre long. It breathes with the gills, like fishes, that eats with frogs and shrimps in its night hunting trips. The females dig into the mud a nest where to lay their long gelatinous cords with about 200 eggs. Then curl up on them protecting them for 5 months © Giuseppe Mazza → For general notions about Caudata please click here. → To appreciate the biodiversity within the SALAMANDERS please click here.
